Saturday, 18.05.2024. from 17.00 – 22.00 Riga Psychiatry and Narcology Center (RPNC) invites you to visit the institution’s 200-year anniversary Museum Night.

RPNC is the oldest psychiatric hospital in the Baltics, the former “Aleksandra Augstumi” in the city’s ancient Second Imperial Garden. The various historical stories of the medical institution are contained in the permanent exposition of the historical and cultural space (museum), which is arranged in the building of the institution built in 1824.

For the first 100 visitors at At 17:00 you will have the opportunity to taste a hearty replica of our first director Otto Wilhelm von Hoon’s dried sauerkraut soup – returning to Riga after completing his studies in Germany, at Göttingen University, he started working in an army hospital and experimented a lot with drying roots, including sauerkraut, to provide the army with easily transportable , healthy food. On the other hand, from At 19:00, hanga musician Harry Vagrant will entertain museum visitors in a meditative and mentally healthy atmosphere.

The visitors will also have access to the rest of the expositions, in which the historical artefacts acquired in the institution can be viewed, the tragic life story of our long-term patient, the promising artist Pēteras Krastiņš, is exhibited, materials about the beginning of our medical institution and the many directors are exhibited, the exposition about the debatable Soviet period, when the institution 40 led by our longest-serving director Zuzanna Sochneva, as well as about the traditions of feeding patients in our medical institution through the ages.

The permanent exposition of the history of RPNC has been created for 10 years. Over time, a large range of materials on important stages of the institution’s activity, events, facts and prominent personalities has been created. The exposition occupies the entire half-basement floor of the institution’s oldest building, with a total area of ​​225 m2, so this year, by supplementing the existing exposition with new materials, we have made sure that it is as easy to understand and accessible to every interested person as possible. Considerable layout plan of the exposition will be placed in the foyer of the museum, which is the business card of our historical and cultural space. Here is also the beginning of a conversation about the important development of the field of mental health in Latvia. The new addition to the exhibition is co-financed within the framework of the Riga City Community Integration Program.

The history and culture room of the Riga Psychiatry and Narcology Center is located in the historic G building and it will be open to visitors on Museum Night until 22:00.
