Three enthusiasts from Jelgava, for whom scuba diving is a hobby, came up with the idea of joining forces with other experts in order not only to explore the underwater world, but also to clean it up and get rid of various waste. This time, the Driksa river was chosen for underwater cleaning.

Underwater cleanup coordinator Shota Plijevs from Jelgava admitted that there is a lot of work in Drix. The participants of the taluka were disturbed by the weather – visibility did not exceed 5-10 centimeters in a very strong current.

Rescuers found tires, bicycle frames and many other items, including various metal objects.

Even motor vehicles came to the rescue to pull out some metal carts.

“Very dark, cloudy water. At that end, there are more all kinds of old barrels, all kinds of scrap metal, a lot of tires, bottles, living, non-living, all kinds of disgusting, sharp, dangerous objects,” said Kristaps Ansons, a member of the underwater cleanup.

Aivars, a resident of Jelgava, was happy about the work of the cleaners: “It’s very nice that people are cleaning the river. They took care of nature, as they say.”

On the other hand, Mareks, a resident of Jelgava, admitted that a kind of sense of community is formed in the taluk. “I look and I have the feeling that we have all done something good together. I think we are growing as a society,” said Marek.

The great public interest justified the organizers’ goal not only to remind people to take care of the environment, but also to show diving as an exciting sport.

The divers had many questions.

“The first – is it expensive? How do you breathe, aren’t you cold, aren’t you wet? The equipment tends to be different – I dive in a dry suit, I’m in dry clothes. There are colleagues here who also dive in a wet suit, but they’re also warm ,” explained the cleanup coordinator Plijevs.

Kristaps Ansons, a cleanup participant, said that divers with different equipment took part in the cleanup.

“We had fellow freedivers here – they dive without a breathing apparatus, they dive purely on holding their breath. Accordingly, they have goggles, a wetsuit, flippers and weights. On the other hand, diving” is such a more complicated event. There you need a breathing apparatus with an air balloon, reducers, pressure gauges, lung apparatus, a vest. Such more complicated equipment.”
