The legal commission will re-examine the proposal submitted by the Ministry of Justice (MoJ) for amendments to the Criminal Law, which would reduce the amount of illegal financing to ten minimum monthly salaries, from which criminal liability arises, the head of the commission, Andrejs Yudins (JV), told LETA agency.

It is scheduled to be viewed on Tuesday, April 30. It promises to be a busy session of the commission, as it is planned to discuss the criminalization of the use of deep-pocketed forgeries during the pre-elections.

Yudins has already expressed his support for these amendments regarding illegal donations to the party, however, the majority in the Legal Commission previously voted against or abstained on this issue.

The politician repeatedly asked his colleagues, and the majority of deputies believe that the issue of strengthening criminal liability for illegal financing should be returned to.

Several parliamentarians previously abstained in the vote because they needed time to familiarize themselves with the offer and consult with faction members, explained Yudins.

The question of these amendments was previously brought up in the Latvian Television program “What’s happening in Latvia?”.

As reported, in the Legal Commission of the Saeima, Prosecutor General Juris Stukāns expressed the opinion that criminal liability for illegal financing of parties should start from the first cent, because no illegally obtained cent should be used to enter the Saeima.
