On Tuesday, President Edgars Rinkēvičs examined the pardon requests of nine convicted persons and decided to prematurely cancel the convictions of two persons, LETA was informed in the Media Center of the President’s Chancellery.

As explained in the chancellery, a criminal record is the legal consequences of the conviction of a person who has committed a criminal offense, which is valid during the serving of the sentence and also thereafter until the conviction is erased or removed. After a certain period of time, the criminal record is erased automatically, but until then, the criminal record of a person who has served a prison sentence can be removed by the court, or it can be removed through the amnesty procedure.

A person whose criminal record has been expunged or removed is considered unpunished, but the restrictions associated with a previous criminal record do not disappear, that is, a criminal record, even expunged or removed, may, according to laws and regulations, create restrictions on applying for various public positions, including military service and fire protection , in the fire and rescue service. Information about the fact that a person has been sentenced to a criminal penalty is kept in the archive of the Criminal Register.

The President of the State has so far pardoned eight persons and examined the pardon requests of 91 convicted persons.

A request for pardon can be submitted after the court verdict has entered into force, except in cases where a person has been sentenced to imprisonment for a serious or particularly serious crime.

In cases where a person has been convicted of committing a serious crime, a pardon request can be submitted if he has actually served not less than half of the sentence of deprivation of liberty.

On the other hand, when a person is convicted of committing a particularly serious crime, a pardon request can be submitted if no less than two-thirds of the sentenced prison sentence has actually been served. In contrast, if sentenced to life imprisonment, the person must serve no less than 20 years of imprisonment before submitting the request.

The previous President Egils Levits considered 409 pardon requests during his term and supported 21. On the other hand, former President Raimonds Vējonis considered 697 pardon requests during his term and supported 22. Guntis Ulmanis considered the most pardon requests, who during his presidency considered 3391 pardon requests, from supported by 219.
