On March 28, at the regular meeting of the Daugavpils City Council, the deputies supported the draft decision on awarding cash prizes to athletes who achieved high results in national and international competitions.

Daugavpils state city municipality monetary awards will be given to wheelchair fencer Dmitrijs Valainis and orienteering athletes – Aleksandrs Ziļs, Dmitrijs Andrejevs and Viktor Leščovs.

From March 5 to 10, Dmitrijs Valainis participated in the European Wheelchair Fencing Championship in Paris (France). More than 100 athletes from 15 different countries participated in the championship. The European Championship was one of the last competitions held before the qualification window for the 2024 Paris Olympics closes at the end of May. In this competition, Dmitrijs won two bronze medals – in fencing with rapiers and with epaulettes. In appreciation of Dmitrijs Valaiins’ achievements, the municipality of the Daugavpils state city will award him a cash prize in the amount of 853.00 euros, while his coach Jūlija Vansoviča will receive a cash prize in the amount of 426.00 euros.

On the other hand, from February 22 to 25, the final international winter orienteering starts took place in the Estonian city of Chania, as well as the World Veteran Ski Orienteering Championship. In the veteran competition, Daugavpils was represented in these starts by athletes from the orienteering club “Stiga” Aleksandrs Zils, Dmitrijs Andrejevs and Viktors Leščovs, who showed high results. Aleksandrs Zils won 3rd place in the sprint and 3rd place in the long distance. He was awarded a municipal prize of 300.00. Dmitrijs Andrejevs won 3rd place in the sprint, 3rd place in the long distance and 3rd place in the middle distance in the M40 group. Dmitrijs Andrejevs will receive a monetary award of 300.00 euros from the municipality. But Viktor Leščov won 3rd place in the sprint and 2nd place in the long distance in the M50 group. Viktor Lesčov will receive a monetary award of 500.00 euros from the municipality.

Daugavpils municipal council member Igors Aleksejevs:

“I am truly happy and proud that the citizens of Daugavpils show excellent achievements in sports. The municipality has been supporting athletes with cash prizes for almost 15 years. Of course, it is not about large amounts, but, nevertheless, it is also an incentive to continue developing in the chosen direction. I would like to congratulate the athletes from the bottom of my heart and wish them to continue to find strength and motivation to work even harder and more persistently, setting an example for all of us.”

Cash prizes for athletes are awarded in accordance with the regulations of the Daugavpils municipal council of September 24, 2020 No. 6 “The procedure for awarding cash prizes for outstanding achievements in sports”.
