It is assumed that in all countries the national flag is treated with great respect. On the morning of March 26, residents of Gulbene reported to “Dzirkstele” that in the city center, near the building on Rīgas street 41, instead of a black ribbon, a strip from a black plastic garbage bag was attached to the Latvian flag.

“Dzirkstele” contacted the police chief of the Gulbene region municipality Mārtis Didrichsons-Linards and informed him about this situation. The municipal police, clarifying the situation, also informed the newspaper.
“We found out the responsible person who hung the flag. The man admitted that he had done it and got scared. The tape wasn’t quite right. It was black polyethylene film tape. It is a blatant disrespect for the flag. The process will be initiated and the case will be sent to the administrative commission for the application of the penalty. The fine is from 10 to 700 euros – let the commission judge! I personally believe that it is not appropriate to use black polyethylene film tape on the flag in a mourning display. Something to do with the flag though! It’s not like I just took some tape and tied it. It’s a flag! We asked for the flag to be removed, and it was done right away,” says M. Didrichsons-Linards.
He also says there have been cases where flags have been seen faded in the sun or torn by the wind. “Taking this case into account, in the future we will pay attention to the flags and their visual condition, so that they are not torn or faded, or similar,” emphasizes M. Didrichsons-Linard.
