On February 25, 19th division legionnaire Antons Mortukans celebrated his 105th birthday. currently lives in the boarding house “Madliena”. On the important anniversary, he was also greeted by the chairman of the municipal council of Ogre region, Egils Helmanis, and the head of the Communication Department, Patriks Grieva.

A. Morutkāns was born on February 25, 1919 in Bērzgale parish, which is part of the current administrative territory of Rēzekne county. On March 15, 1944, he was conscripted into the Latvian SS volunteer legion, where he fought until he was captured during the battles of the so-called “Kurzeme pot”*. Worked as an accountant in a repair shop, lived in Riga until last fall, when he moved to Madliena’s nursing home.

The manager of the nursing home, Inese Rudzgaile, says that A. Mortukāns often says that his soul wants to rise above his age. He actively follows the news on television, is interested in sports, especially tennis. The freedom fighter of Latvia is still a great patriot of Latvia and calls on others to appreciate and protect our country. He wishes each of us these significant words from the legionary song “Trinity”:

“Let the Latvian sun not set
never never
Let the Latvian sword not rust
Never, never!”

* Kurzeme fortress or Kurzeme cauldron refers to the triangle in Kurzeme Liepāja-Tukums-Ventspils, where during the Second World War, from October 1944 to May 1945, the surrounded Latvian army and a German army group fought against the Red Army. This encircled part of the German army was called Group North and later renamed Group Kurzeme. With the signing of the treaty on May 8, 1945, the Second World War in Europe also ended.
