He admits this is true because salt lowers the freezing point of water, which allows water to penetrate the asphalt concrete. Cars, on the other hand, load the road, and then the water creates quite a lot of pressure.
However, several factors are required for pits to form. In addition to water and salt exposure, vehicular loading is also important and the thickness of the asphalt layer may be inadequate.
This process is related to what is called pore water pressure.
It has already been reported that huge puddles formed in many places due to the thaw in the streets of Riga, under which there are often potholes that are dangerous for traffic.
The most critical situation is Biķernieku Street, Jaunciema Street, Mīlgrāvja Street, Mīlgrāvja Lokos and Viestura Avenue.
With cold asphalt laying technology, potholes dangerous to traffic are repaired regardless of the weather, even in winter.
The service life of repaired roads is affected by several factors – weather conditions, traffic intensity and the condition of the road surface. However, the main goal of these works is to prevent traffic-dangerous situations, the Riga City Council has previously stated.
