The letter reads: “These cars have spread throughout North America and are now becoming more common in Europe. Every year it gets worse. Latvia is no exception.”
A link to the LSM.LV article has also been added, which states that SUVs were at the top of the list of the best-selling cars last year.
The off-road segment car kingdom – its car experts evaluate the statistical indicators of the most purchased cars in the past year. Last year, private individuals registered 18,000 vehicles, and the first five most-purchased vehicles in the new car segment are Toyota and Škoda SUVs. On the other hand, the second-hand car market is still dominated by BMW, Volkswagen and Audi.
Environmental activists explain: “These cars are big and heavy, which means they need more fuel to run, which worsens the climate. Also, such cars have a higher risk of colliding with other cars and pedestrians, which can also have fatal consequences. There are better ways to get around – public transport, bicycles, walking or at least a smaller car. SUVs are unnecessarily harmful to everyone.”
Activists are calling for a ban on SUVs, as well as serious investment in alternative modes of transport and radical traffic regulation. At the same time, it is also clear that this will not happen so soon, so the activities with releasing the air from the tires will continue.
Meanwhile, the residents are really unhappy with such a surprise.
A woman writes ironically on social networks: “Thank you to those neighbors who chose my family car. Just a family with four children, one parent who is on bed rest right after surgery. An inspiring urban environment. Thank you!”
