On November 20, President Edgars Rinkevičs visited the West Bank, where he met with the President of the Palestinian Authority, Mahmoud Abbas (Mahmoud Abbas).

The President expressed his condolences to the Palestinian civilians who are victims of the current situation. At the same time, E. Rinkēvičs noted the need to condemn the terrorist attacks carried out by “Hamas”, and also emphasized the importance of the release of prisoners.

During the conversation, ways to prevent the further spread of violence and humanitarian disaster in the region, as well as to provide support to the Palestinians in covering their humanitarian needs, were discussed. The President expressed support for continuing efforts to achieve a two-state political solution and ensure sustainable peace. Also, E. Rinkēvičs pointed out that Latvia, as a member of the European Union (EU), is in favor of creating a closer EU-Palestine political dialogue and supports the conclusion of a full-scale EU-Palestine association agreement.

The President noted Latvia’s contribution to the UN Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Middle East (UNRWA) and the World Food Program (WFP) to provide support to Palestinian civilians.
