Celebrating the 23rd birthday of SIA “Nordic Plast”, the largest and fastest growing group of environmental resource management companies in the Baltics, JSC “Eco Baltia”, a plastic packaging processing plant SIA “Nordic Plast”, officially opened a new sorting and processing line for secondary raw materials, in which the company has invested 2.8 million euros. This will allow “Nordic Plast” to increase the processing capacity of secondary raw materials up to 30% or up to 300 tons per month, increasing the company’s efficiency and competitiveness in international markets.
The new equipment, which started working in test mode already in November, is intended for sorting materials of different purity, promoting the recycling of that part of the packaging, which has been difficult to handle until now. This is a significant investment in terms of fulfilling the polymer recycling goals set in Latvia and the European Union (EU) – from the current 22% to 50% of the total volume of polymer packaging placed on the market by 2025. The line will operate 24/7, however, its operation in the planned volumes will not affect the energy efficiency of “Nordic Plast”.
“In 23 years, the company has processed more than 180,000 tons of plastic packaging and has undeniably experienced significant growth. The first major modernization measures were implemented already in 2014, investing 2.5 million euros in the creation of a new production facility. Over the past 10 years, we have invested more than 6 million euros in the development of the company, and this is a natural continuation. Our main goal is to increase the amount of local raw material, and the new sorting line will allow to significantly improve the quality of raw materials as well, because the sorting of materials will be done automatically and in much larger volumes than a human could do. This, in turn, will improve the quality of the final product, as the quality requirements are constantly growing in order for the company to be competitive in the market. The consumption of resources in the world is greater than the planet can provide, so the development and implementation of recycling technologies is important not only for achieving our own business goals in the coming years, but also for creating a sustainable environment,” says Andris Trumars, director of SIA “Nordic Plast”..
SIA “Nordic Plast” is part of AS “Eco Baltia” group of companies, which by turnover is the largest group of environmental management companies in the Baltic States and provides a full cycle of waste management from collection and sorting to secondary raw material logistics, wholesale and processing. In 2019, “Nordic Plast” and “Eco Baltia” joined the Plastics Circulation Alliance (Circular Plastics Alliance) for the declaration, which expresses the commitment to achieve that by 2025, at least 10 million tons of recycled plastic are used in the production of new plastic products every year.
“Nordic Plast” has also implemented globally recognized quality management and environmental management systems, for which the certificates of the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) have been received – ISO 9001 and ISO 14001, the ISO 50001 certificate has been renewed for the successful implementation of energy management processes, and the certificate of the European certification program “EuCertPlast” has been received , which operates in accordance with the European Union (EU) standard EN 15343:2007. Based on this, manufacturers who use secondary raw materials produced by “Nordic Plast” obtain an official certificate of the origin, traceability, composition and quality of the recycled materials in accordance with the requirements of “EuCertPlast”.
“Recyclable waste should primarily be seen as a resource, an opportunity to create new raw materials and promote Latvia’s economy instead of exporting these resources or wasting them. We are pleased with the successful work and growth of “Nordic Plast” during these years, constantly introducing new technologies, improving the efficiency and capacity of our operations and becoming a significant participant in the recycling market not only in Latvia, but also on the Baltic scale. says JSC “Eco Baltia” chairman of the board Māris Simanovičs.
Investments in the creation of the new “Nordic Plast” line are partially covered by the funds of the European Union fund project “SIA “Nordic Plast” polymer processing park” (No. 5.2.1.2/17/A/005).
