For not giving way to pedestrians who cross the road at a pedestrian crossing, or to blind pedestrians who show a signal with a white cane, it is planned to impose a penalty of up to 140 euros on drivers of vehicles, determining that the minimum penalty for such a violation could be 30 euros, it is expected today in the second reading in the Saeima the supported amendments to the Road Traffic Law, which the Parliament will still have to decide on in the final reading.

Currently, the amount of the fine specified in the law for such an activity is from 15 to 70 euros.

On the other hand, it is planned to impose a fine from 10 to 30 euros on the driver of a bicycle or electric scooter for not giving way to pedestrians.

The amendments envisage increasing the penalty for not observing a safe distance or interval by applying a warning or a fine from 10 to 70 euros to the driver of a bicycle or electric scooter, and a warning or a fine from 10 to 140 euros to the driver of another vehicle.

It is also planned that the vehicle can be forcibly moved by placing it in a special parking space, if the vehicle is completely or partially on the sidewalk, pedestrian path, bicycle path, obstructs the free movement of pedestrians, or is forced to exit onto the roadway.

MEPs also backed a proposal to no longer issue a warning as a penalty for not wearing a seat belt or helmet, and for carrying a passenger who is not wearing a seat belt or helmet. For such a violation, a fine of between 30 and 70 euros is applied to the driver of the vehicle.

It is also planned to turn off the warning as a punishment for driving in the relevant direction if the green arrow signal is not lit in the additional section of the traffic light. For this, the driver of the vehicle could be fined from 30 to 55 euros.
