“Georgia is a close friend of Latvia and can count on our country’s support on the way to the European Union and NATO. Also, we steadfastly stand for Georgia’s territorial integrity,” said the Speaker of the Saeima, Edvards Smiltēns, on Tuesday, January 24, during a meeting with Georgia’s Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary to Latvia In the Republic, Teu Maisuradze (Tea Maisuradze). The ambassador had come to the parliament on a farewell visit.
The ambassador thanked Latvia for its strong support and emphasized that we are united by common values. T.Maisuradze emphasized the support of Georgian society for the country’s European integration path and belonging to Europe. The speaker of the Saeima and the ambassador discussed the situation in Georgia, whose territories of Abkhazia and South Ossetia have been occupied by Russia since 2008. Also, E. Smiltēns and the ambassador discussed support for Ukraine, which is fighting not only for its freedom and values of the whole of Europe. As emphasized by E. Latvia is one of the most active providers of aid to Ukraine, the support makes up a percentage of the country’s gross domestic product. “Even though we are not such a big country in terms of size, we have a big heart,” said the speaker of the Saeima, pointing to the support given to Ukraine by the people of Latvia.
Discussing the possibilities of strengthening parliamentary cooperation, E. Smiltēns emphasized that a group of deputies has also been established in the Saeima to promote cooperation with the Georgian Parliament. More than a quarter of the members of the Saeima work in it.
